Antique Early Victorian rosewood couch, pre 1840. Our records of this piece include an unsigned memo (copy of memo included in photos) dating to the 1930s that was associated with the couch and several other pieces of pre 1840 furniture from the same estate in Lusby, MD. In this memo, a reference is made to this pre-1840 piece being in use by the “Vining/Ayers families around 1850” and dating the couch to "before 1840". This couch (acquired around 1930 by my great grandfather-in-law (born 1890 in Baltimore, MD). The sofa spent the last century in an historic home (built circa 1907) on the Patuxent River in Lusby, Maryland. The couch has been well kept and the overall piece is in very good condition (frame, exposed rosewood, and springs). It was reupholstered once (as far as we are aware) in the early 1990s and is currently a peach color with stripped pattern. My family has downsized and is looking for a new owner to enjoy and preserve this beautiful, historic piece. We have elected not to reupholster this piece to allow the new owner freedom in selecting fabric, pattern, and color to complement their aesthetics--our pricing reflects this.
