This gorgeous American or English antique dates from circa 1880-1890. It stands 74 inches tall and is made in two sections. The top half measures 44 inches tall, (& is < 9 inches deep), the bottom portion is 30 inches tall (19 5/8 inches deep). According to the woodworking shop the piece is solid cherry; and the locksmith (who created a new key for the fully functional drawer lock w/escutcheon), thinks it's likely English. The hardware appears to be of the Eastlake period. I dated the piece based on the labels (see collage/picture #18): Kinport Storage and Van Company was located @ this address from March 1893-1897. The Globe Co., S.O. Thorell, Prp., was located @ 604 15th St. from 1898 to 1900. I've been unable to locate the maker, United Studios, Inc.; the piece is similar to a Herter Brothers design. Please notice the numerous features: display shelves, arches, & a bracket (both w/incised carving) on the top left section balanced by two small drawers w/trim, and an oriental-inspired fretwork cabinet door on the right. Further up are architectural details: a flying butress, overtop a gallery. The center portion contains two cabinets, both w/round beleved mirrors. Carved floral decoration and carved spherical shapes are repeated throughout, including on the two left legs, while the other three legs are splayed. The lower portion contains two drawers below an open shelf and another cabinet with carving and a brass ring pull handle; the 3 larger drawers having dovetail joinery.
