Rare Hand-Signed "Tapis Vert" porcelain plate - Workshop in Vallauris, 1950's Polychrome glazed earthenware plate depicting a little girl in front of the Eiffel Tower. Hand-Signed by Bemelmans lower right and signed and titled "Eiffel Tower" on the back. Diameter: 20 cm Excellent Condition *Ludwig Bemelmans is best known as the author and illustrator of the Madeline children's book series but also for his extremely collectible rare refined art and design work. * Ceramics: Bemelmans created a number of rare ceramic plates and art pottery, often featuring illustrations from his Madeline stories, created in "Tapis Vert" workshop at Vallauris the 1950's. •This workshop was founded in 1950 by Claire and René Batigne. The main woodturner at this workshop was Blaise Aïelo, assisted by Albert Thiry, Claude Verlinde and François Natoli. Until 1966, the workshop commissioned numerous artists, including Amédée Ozenfant, Prince Rodolphe de Faucigny-Lucinge, Irving Hoffmann, Ludwig Bemelmans, Nicolas de Staël, and Jacques Prévert. In 1966, the factory was taken over by Blaise Aïelo.
