1976 Large Tsukashin Studio Pottery Ginger Jar

Chairish

$1,200

This striking lidded jar, signed "Tsukashin" and dated 1976, stands 8 inches tall and spans 6.5 inches at its widest. A masterful example of wheel-thrown stoneware, its form is both elegant and robust, with exceptionally thin, evenly constructed walls that speak to the potter’s refined technique. The jar’s design reflects a synthesis of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and modern artistic expression. The surface is adorned with dynamic cobalt blue slip decoration, layered over a raw, textured stoneware body. The patterns—fluid yet intentional—suggest an abstracted botanical theme, while the encircling motifs lend a sense of rhythm and movement, reminiscent of classical brushwork in Japanese ceramics. The contrast between the deep blue glaze and exposed clay enhances the tactile quality of the piece, emphasizing its handmade nature. The lid, with its softly domed shape and wide, flared rim, completes the vessel’s harmonious proportions. Remaining in excellent condition with no signs of wear, this jar is a beautiful and enduring work of art—one that bridges the traditions of the past with a contemporary sensibility unique to Tsukashin’s practice. This is the larger of two ginger jars by Tsukashin I have in the shop.
