This exact reproduction of a monumental tureen (circa 1740-60) is one of the oldest objects in the Mottahedeh assortment. It is fashioned as a tureen, but we can't image who would serve soup with it. Besides the dramatic and elegant sweep of its body and lustrous coral color with touches of gold, one is impressed that this sculpture defies the essential nature of hard porcelain, which is to slump in the kiln when the ceramic fuses to glass. It is a testament to the ceramist's art from every perspective.To the Chinese the carp represents success and plenty. A favorite with brides, Mottahedeh specializes in luxurious patterns and unique, elegant shapes that are reproduced from china found in museums and historical societies. The patterns feature complex and vibrant colors, and hand-painted gold decoration. The pieces are surprisingly fresh and timely, and look wonderful in both contemporary and traditional dining rooms.
