Kyoto Satsuma Covered Landscape Jar By Yamashu, 1890s

Chairish

$1,634

A finely painted Kyoto Satsuma covered jar with a calm, atmospheric landscape extending around the body. Soft hills, riverbanks and distant pavilions blend with chrysanthemum clusters in a pastel palette of pink, lilac and orange, all elevated by delicate gilt detailing. The ovoid form is balanced by broad geometric brocade borders at the shoulder and foot, with the domed lid echoing the same motifs and finished with a gilt knop. The underside carries a black-and-gold Yamashu (山珠) cartouche beneath a red Shimazu crest, a combination typical of Kyoto Satsuma studios working towards the end of the 19th century. The decoration reads harmoniously from all angles, making the jar a strong sculptural accent for a refined interior. Historical Background Kyoto Satsuma emerged as a distinctive branch of Satsuma ware during the late Meiji period, characterised by its lighter pastel palette and highly controlled line work. These pieces were painted with an eye towards subtlety and atmosphere, contrasting with the denser decoration of Kagoshima Satsuma. The Yamashu mark appears on well-finished Kyoto export pieces from the 1880s–1890s. Measurements Height: 25 cm / 9.84″ Diameter: 16.5 cm / 6.49″ Weight: 1254 g Condition Excellent condition with clean enamelling and crisp detail. No chips, cracks or restoration under UV; light rubbing to the gilt knop only. A refined, well-preserved example with strong decorative presence.
