Early 20th century set of five french stoneware confit pots the vintage french hand crafted stoneware “grès vernissé” confit pots have traditional mottled beige glaze with a distinctive lined pattern and applied handles. this is a charming set and a very rare find, their capacities are 8, 4, 3, 2 and 1 litres. Their condition is remarkably fine with very few marks for pieces of household pottery over 100 years old. these beautiful pots would have been manufactured in the south west of france dating from the early 1900s. these pots were used to cook and preserve “confit de canard”, preserved duck and meat preparations preserved by a thick layer of fat. one of the most famous recipes being “cassoulet” which originated in a small town called castelnaudary in the south west of france. it is still a favourite winter dish of the region. these stoneware vessels were once used daily in french country kitchens and can be found in different hues and sizes. Crock jars with two handles, a very basic ceramic slow cooker. these pots are sturdy and stylish and will blend into any style of home, they can be used in kitchens for cutlery storage, flowerpots or just conversation pieces.
