Red Jasper is my one of my preferred stone bottles. There is something about the red color that really appeals to me. I also love the elegant slender form. The shape of a snuff bottle is dependent how the carver views the stone, and how he/she can utilize the stone to give the best appearance possible. The result here is a very handsome, and well proportioned snuff bottle. The carver was able to show off the beauty of the stone, choosing the part where the light lines are absolutely parallel to one another. The flattened oblong shape tapers to a raised flat oval foot. The straight neck rests on the sloping shoulders. The top is also flat with the opening at the center. It is matched with a tan color agate stopper on a black collar which is a very nice contrast. The bottle is hollowed. This bottle is purchased from an English collector. He was with the British Navy in the late 1970's which allowed him the opportunities to purchase snuff bottles all along the China coast and Southeast Asia. The bottles he purchased are unique and better made than the snuff bottles made in this century. The style of this bottle is very similar to the Kalahari Jasper snuff bottle.
