This full-bodied sheet metal (or perhaps tin), Rooster Weathervane captures the enduring spirit of 19th-century American craftsmanship. Each feather, eye, and crest was meticulously hand-hammered into a mold (perhaps wood or metal giving the surface a remarkable sense of texture and life. Once the two halves were shaped, they were carefully soldered together, a hallmark of the finest early metalwork. While many weathervanes from the mid-1800s onward were produced in series, earlier examples like this were often singular creations forged by blacksmiths and sheet-metal artisans experimenting with form and technique. The detailing and proportions of this piece suggest a one-of-a-kind folk-art interpretation rather than a factory reproduced pattern.
