Antique Hand-Made Red Lacquer Chinese Covered Wedding Basket A lovely antique Chinese red lacquer wedding basket with a beautiful overlapping bent and intricately-carved elm wood and bronze handles. The basket, which has a wooden bottom, is made of hand-woven and split bamboo and willow fibers in two layers to provide strength and rigidity. The outer layer is woven in a traditional geometric design. Wedding rituals have a long history in ancient China—the most significant custom being the presentation of gifts. This basket opens to reveal two compartments of stacked trays. The gifts carried in those trays represented the couple’s engagement, the groom’s promises to the bride’s family and the acceptance of the bride and groom into each other’s family.
