Sculptural and abstract, this 19th-century wooden fish from Yunnan province likely originated as a Buddhist temple bell. Known simply as "wooden fish" (mùyú), these fish-shaped woodblocks were used by Buddhist monks as percussive instruments to keep rhythm while chanting or reciting texts. This elongated fish would have been hung outside the temple door and struck to announce the time or to call the monks to assemble. Because fish were thought to never sleep, the sound of the fish bell symbolized wakefulness and inspired rapt attention to Buddhist teachings. This example is primitive in form, etched with fish scales and textured with a rich patina. Weathered from years of use, the fish has been lovingly mended with iron staples and metal repairs.
