Chinese Shanxi 1840s Hand Carved Wooden Corbel With Deities Mounted On Base

Chairish

$3,220

A Chinese Shanxi carved wooden corbel from the mid 19th century, mounted on a base and depicting two deities. Born in the Northern Province of Shanxi during the 1840s, this exquisite wooden corbel demonstrates the undeniable skill Chinese artists possessed at the time. Presenting two deities (possibly Zhong Kui and Guanyin), the corbel is adorned with an abundance of motifs and showcases traces of its original polychromy. The male character on the left, holding a sword and a fan, adopts a nicely curving posture beautifully echoed by the female character on the right whose clothes and hairstyle are typical of the Tang dynasty. Accented with a stylized dragon figure and scrolls, which are typical Chinese motifs, this Chinese carved corbel, circa 1840 is mounted on a custom wooden base, making it a wonderful decorative object to be displayed anywhere in a home, from a foyer to a living room where it will be a great conversation piece. Dimensions without base: 16"W x 4"D x 34"H.
