Hill's StandardDimensions: D 17,1 x W 7,4 x H 2 cm.Materials: Blown GlassAvailable in these materials: Porcelain / Blown GlassAvailable in these colors: Clear / Grey / AmberAn air borne puff of a pipe.We first approached Aldo Bakker in 2019 to design a family of objects for J. HILL’sStandard. We were drawn by the lightness that suffuses all of Aldo’s objects. This qualitysprings partly from his strong sense of play and humour. Beauty, magic, escape from theworld of noise into embodied calm and quietness – these things are fugitive but to the forein everything he creates. The capture of an early primary gesture led to an exploration ofideas though extended conversation and sketches over the last two years. This painstaking process, in many ways enabled by extended pandemic lockdown, led tothe incubation of a family of forms. From this pool of potential, a handful of pieces cameinto being. A deliberate openness to possibility in the design stage lead us on a journey ofmethod and material discovery: each piece enacting its identity in various materials – glassboth blown and kiln cast, brass, stone and porcelain. This is POT VARIATIONS, a familyof things, each bearing its own name and individual characteristics.J. Hill’s Standard pieces marry contemporary design and traditional craftsmanship, celebrating the progressive, the time honoured and the handmade.Named for John Hill, a mysterious 18th-century figure who vanished from Irish shores but left behind a standard of such exquisite brilliance it might as well have been a love letter to lead crystal, the brand doesn’t just honour heritage - it toys with it. Hill’s “Standard” was never about sameness - it was a provocation. A wink. A dare across centuries. What if craftsmanship could be a little unruly? What if a whiskey tumbler could be an oracle?J. Hill’s Standard lives in that delightful tension - between legacy and invention, ritual and rupture. Their pieces are less objects, more odes: to landscape, to memory, to the stubborn joy of making things the slow way, the right way. They look like they’ve emerged from a collaboration between an ancient guild and an alien design council - part monastic relic, part Martian glassware.
