Minimalistic, solid wood Japanese rice mortar, circa 1800. This mochi mortar is our oldest and most exquisite piece. The texture of the ancient wood resembles that of an elephant's hide. The mortar has been meticulously treated and will certainly captivate attention as an authentic interior object. This Mochi-Tsuki Usu was traditionally used in the making of mochi, a Japanese rice dessert. Mochi is created by pounding glutinous rice into a sticky dough ball. Using the wooden pestle, the rice is finely pounded and kneaded into a cohesive mass. This process requires strength and patience, as the rice grains must be fully processed into a cohesive dough.
