Superb old Baule hand-carved heddle pulley from the Ivory Coast. They are known for their weaving and this is typical of a functional piece used on a narrow-band loom which would separate the threads and allow the shuttle to pass through. Pulleys like these were often embellished, thus allowing artists to also showcase their carving skills. These carvings are typically human or animal heads and have no sacred meaning. 10" H by 2.5" W by 2.25" D with a detachable black stand 5.5" W by 3.25" D
