Superb old Baule hand-carved heddle pulley from the Ivory Coast. They are known for their weaving and this is typical of a functional piece used on a narrow-band loom which would separate the threads and allow the shuttle to pass through. Pulleys like these were often embellished, thus allowing artists to also showcase their carving skills.
