A late 20th century Chinese elm desk of compact, architectural form, designed with a concealed nesting chair that slides seamlessly beneath the case when not in use. Constructed in solid elm with striking cathedral grain throughout, the desk features through-post legs, shaped apron brackets, and a mitered frame top with subtly raised edges. When the chair is tucked in, two faux drawers with bronze-finished ring pulls give the piece the appearance of a small chest. Once the chair is pulled forward, the desk reveals a single functional drawer beneath the writing surface. The accompanying chair is thoughtfully proportioned to tuck fully within the footprint of the desk, transforming the piece into a sculptural cabinet when closed. This dual-function design reflects the Ming-inspired emphasis on clarity of line, balance, and purposeful restraint. JUNE'S THOUGHTS What drew me in immediately was the way the chair disappears. When tucked in, the piece reads almost like a small chest or table. Pull the chair forward, and it becomes an intimate writing station. It’s clever without feeling gimmicky. I’m always drawn to furniture that adapts to real living. Compact enough for an apartment or library corner, yet substantial enough to feel intentional without overwhelming the room.
