A late Victorian Parcel-gilt oak, birch and leather desk chair by Howard and Sons, late 19th century. The seat is of adjustable height, with paper label: Howard and Sons/ Upholsterers/ London. Providence: Christie's London "Interiors" sale July 19,2017, lot 366. BIO: Established in 1820 by John Howard, the business went on to become Howard & Sons. Trading from multiple addresses in London, the firm is best known for its exceptional quality upholstered furniture, but they also excelled in upholstery, cabinet making, and wall and floor coverings. In 1872 they relocated to their most notable address, Berners Street. There they flourished, winning awards at multiple exhibitions including two gold and a silver at the Paris Exhibition of 1900. Working with exclusive clients throughout the 19th and early 20th century, and boasting Royal patronage, Howard & Sons became a sure mark of quality. The Victoria and Albert Museum of London features a Howard & Sons 1862 cabinet in their collection. Most of their work is marked with either a stamp, paper or Ivorine label. Stamps are often found on the castors or inside the back leg.
