E63 Robot Table Lamp By Umberto Riva For Bieffeplast, 1960s

Chairish

$926

The e63 “robot” desk lamp by umberto riva, deigned in 1963 and produced by bieffeplast, is an iconic example of italian postmodern lighting design. characterised by its distinctly anthropomorphic form, the lamp is composed of a sharply angled, geometric base supporting a vertical stem and an adjustable, visor-like shade. The overall silhouette suggests a stylised mechanical figure, hence its “robot” nickname. The design balances playful personality with rigorous architectural structure, a hallmark of riva’s work. executed in plastic, the lamp features contrasting black hardware and exposed structural elements, which emphasise its functional, almost industrial character. The pivoting head allows for directional light, making it well suited as a desk or task lamp, while the sculptural form ensures it reads equally as a design object. both expressive and disciplined, the e63 reflects the experimental spirit of mid century italian design, where geometry, colour and function were combined with wit and precision. It remains one of riva’s most recognisable lighting designs and a strong example of the era’s forward-thinking approach to domestic objects. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no official proof of authenticity, however it is well documented in design history.
