A magnificent antique leather top Carlton House desk. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1890-1900 period. It is of the utmost quality, it has a very smart design and is a great size. The wood has a gorgeous colour tone and beautiful grain patterns on all sides. The inset leather top has a fantastic colour and tooled edges, the central section lifts up to be a writing slope and is supported by a ratchet mechanism. There is plenty of storage space in the many drawers, which have high quality brass handles, Hobbs locks and fine, hand cut dovetailed joints. The upper section has a pierced brass gallery and lovely brass letter apertures that lead down into the small cabinets. This stands on tapered legs terminating in brass casters, it is nicely finished on all sides, so can be used as a free standing item. We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some very minor old wear and patina here and there beneath the polish. The upper section lifts off for ease of transport, and is held in place by dowel pegs.
