Late 19th Century Inlaid Walnut Desk, Italy

Chairish

$12,000

A stunning bone-inlaid walnut desk with scroll apron and pierced Baroque legs. Italy, late 19th Century. Handcrafted circa 1885, this beautiful desk shows an intricate geometric inlay pattern throughout, made with bone, possibly some elements of ivory, and fine wood veneer. With a beveled top writing surface, a scroll apron and pierced balustrade legs, the desk shows both the influence of the Baroque style and the centuries-long tradition of inlay and marquetry (Intarsia) among Italian artisans. It is the combination of these features what distinguishes European inlaid furniture from its Anglo-Indian counterparts. Anglo-Indian furniture mostly features flower or animal patterns made of white and black inlay material, and basic turned legs. Geometric inlay patterns and the use of wood veneer marquetry, however, are more often found on European pieces, while incorporating elements of other styles like Baroque Revival, in this beautiful example. The desk shows signs of age and use, including some slight fading and discoloration. The top is slightly warped, but it does not affect its stability or structural integrity.
