This is the rare johnson wax desk, model 617, designed in 1936 by frank lloyd wright for the administrative offices of the johnson wax headquarters in racine, wisconsin, usa. this example was manufactured by cassina, italy, which received exclusive rights to produce the original furniture designs from the frank lloyd wright foundation in 1985. A maximum of 500 tables were produced in black in 1992; this model is one of the rare versions. the desk impresses with its sculptural appearance: the generously elliptical tabletop is complemented by a second level, which serves as a storage area for documents or as a decorative structure. The construction is made of black lacquered wood and metal, combined with brass details. Characteristic features include the curved sides and functional elements – on the right, a semicircular container with two drawers, and on the left, a removable wastepaper basket, elegantly suspended from the metal structure. The delicate struts underscore the architectural character of the design, which follows wright's clean lines and organic formal language. particularly noteworthy is the signature on the underside, featuring the cassina label, wright signature, and the number 319, which attests to the authenticity of this piece of furniture. This desk is one of the most exclusive design classics in the cassina range. condition: the desk is in good vintage condition with a few light signs of wear, such as minor scratches and minimal paint imperfections on the metal parts.
