Afra & Tobia Scarpa "Africa" dining chairs for Maxalto, black leather, walnut and burl, Italy, 1975, set of six. Originally hand finished and assembled one-by-one, "Africa" presents a support structure in solid wood with a slender rectangular section. In this model, the pattern of thicknesses of the veneers achieves the greatest impact; beyond the level of the seat, in curved plywood covered with leather, a back takes form with great sculptural force. The perfect correspondence of the curved lines is achieved by making this part out of a single piece of wood, divided and finished in two specular parts. Afra Bianchin (1937-2011) and Tobia Scarpa (1935) began their long collaboration in 1957. Starting from 1960, they collaborated with companies like Gavina, B&B Italia, and Cassina. Innovators and unconventional thinkers, they developed numerous projects discovering new ways of mixing different materials and shapes. Their pieces are exhibited in many museums worldwide, such as the MoMa in New York and the Musée du Louvre in Paris. Our atelier restored and reupholstered the item.
