Fredericia’s J39 chair combines a solid wood frame with a lightly padded seat upholstered in linen canvas. Originally designed in 1947 by Danish architect Børge Mogensen with a paper cord seat, this upholstered version follows the curved lines of the cord weave and is based on Mogensen’s 1969 prototype. With its timeless and natural character, the J39 chair works beautifully as a dining chair, as well as adding warmth and presence to an office or living space. Mogensen designed the chair originally for FDB, the Danish Consumers’ Co-operative Society, which chose Mogensen as its head designer in 1939. FDB’s furniture production began in the 1940s, with the main idea being functionalist and democratic design for the people. As the J39 chair gained popularity, it also earned the nickname ‘The People’s Chair’.
