Pair Of English Regency Mahogany Swan Back Side Chairs, Circa 1820

Chairish

$2,400

An antique pair of English Regency mahogany side chairs dating early 19th century. Each features a gently curved crest rail above a carved splat of opposing swans flanking a stylized shell—an elegant and distinctly British motif. The frames are light and well-proportioned, with slender supports and graceful saber legs. The crest rails retain their original figured veneer, now softly mellowed with age. Recently reupholstered in a neutral textile, the seats provide a clean contrast to the warmth of the wood while making the chairs immediately usable. A balanced Regency pair with clear period character, ready for your home. COLLECTOR'S NOTE The swan motif is characteristic of English Regency design, where classical ornament is interpreted with a lighter, more fluid hand. Unlike heavier American Empire examples, Regency chairs emphasize movement and refinement through curved lines and restrained carving. Surviving pairs with this level of detail and proportion are increasingly scarce, particularly in usable condition.
