Afra (1937–2011) and Tobia (b. 1935) Scarpa were an Italian architect and designer duo celebrated for their refined postmodern approach. Afra Bianchin, born in Montebelluna, and Tobia Scarpa, son of renowned architect Carlo Scarpa, met while studying at the Venice Institute of Architecture, later marrying and forming one of Italy’s most acclaimed design partnerships. Between 1957 and 1961, Tobia worked as a glass designer for Venini in Murano before the pair established their own studio in 1960. Their collaborations with prestigious manufacturers such as Flos, Gavina, B&B Italia, and Knoll earned them international recognition and numerous awards, including the Compasso d’Oro and the International Forum Design Award. Throughout their careers, the Scarpas’ designs balanced modernist elegance with classical restraint, demonstrating a profound understanding of materials and craftsmanship.
