Design Within Reach

Italian architect and designer Tobia Scarpa defines design as “a profession without a rule book." In the 1960s and 1970s it was this vision, and his creative partnership with his wife Afra, that pushed Italy's techniques and aesthetics into a new golden age. The Scarpa 121 Dining Chair (1965) was inspired by a sketch made by Tobia's father, Venetian architect and designer Carlo Scarpa, but Tobia and Afra put their distinct spin on it, creating an enduring icon of midcentury Italian design. Its sturdy, double-trestle wood frame contrasts with the lightness and curves of the leather-wrapped seat and contoured, cantilevered back with a distinctive slotted cutout. Made in Italy.
