Vico Magistretti “Carimate” Chair For Cassina, Taupe Alpaca Wool, 1960

$1,850

Vico Magistretti "Carimate" dining chairs for Cassina, black lacquered wood and taupe alpaca wool seat, Italy, 1960.Magistretti designed the "Carimate" in 1959 for the golf club of the same name in Como, presenting it the following year at the XII Triennale di Milano in the section dedicated to rural design. The chair was taken into production by Cassina in 1963 and became one of the most recognized pieces of postwar Italian furniture — a meeting of Scandinavian formal rigor and Italian craft tradition, built entirely in beech without recourse to plastic or metal. The structure is resolved with characteristic precision: the four legs swell at the seat junction to distribute load at the point of greatest stress, the cylindrical back uprights continue uninterrupted into the rear legs, and the armrests align flush with the curved backrest rail. Magistretti applied an aniline lacquer to the beech — a finishing technique borrowed from the toy industry, which gave the wood a depth of color not previously associated with furniture of this type
