This is a 1950s wilhelm renz metamorphic dining table from germany, and it is one of the most cleverly engineered pieces of midcentury furniture we have seen in a long time. The top is finished in stunningly figured book matched teak, rich with grain that catches the light from every angle, and it sits on the most beautifully sculptural tapered legs. But here is where it gets genuinely clever. The table extends to seat six with ease, closes down to a compact footprint perfect for smaller spaces, and — through an ingenious height adjustment mechanism — rises and falls a full 14cm, converting effortlessly between coffee table and dining table height. A piece of proper postwar german design craft, fully functional and looking absolutely sensational. stamped 'made in germany' with the wr maker's badge. The brass hinges for folding the table are strong with a lovely patina. There is a small period repair to the corner of the table as seen in the last image, otherwise it’s in fabulous condition for its age. measurements open: 116cm w x 99.5cm d x 69cm h table closed: 99.5cm w x 58.5cm d.
