Handsome antique American Federal / Sheraton cherry drop-leaf dining table, circa 1820–1830. The table is built on six legs — four fixed, two swing-gate legs that pivot out to carry the leaves — each one carved in a bold spiral rope twist above ring turnings and terminating in a turned ball foot. Rope-carved legs were a fashionable early-19th-century motif with maritime associations, and they're what lift this table above the ordinary country drop-leaf; the carving here is deep, even, and crisp on all six. Made of solid cherry with warm color and lovely figure — cherry was the wood of choice for New England cabinetmakers working inland, particularly the Connecticut River Valley. The thick, solid leaves raise on hand-cut hinges to make a generous dining surface, and drop to slim the table down against a wall. Wonderfully versatile: seats six-plus with both leaves up, works as a sofa or console table with the leaves down, and adapts to almost any room in between.
