This beautiful large, almost square bankers table or merchants table can be perfectly used as a dining table or a front hall center table Probably Swiss or Austrian origin, circa 1800 The thick solid wooden tabletop is made from fruitwood and the base is made of pinewood. This is a typical merchant's table , the purpase was to create a certain distance between the person paying and the recipient. The payment would go in the drawer and then the drawer would slide towards the recipient. The money was put in the drawer so the amount being paid was private. The drawer can also be locked with wooden pins to unable it to be opened by the person on the other side. It has an amazing soft honey color patina that only time can create with a soft gloss shine Good, original and structurally good condition The table has been cleaned and a new protective wax coat was applied. The table shows wear commensurate with its age and the practical use it would have once served. Great in a naive, rustic, primitive Wabi-Sabi interior
