World renowned mad architects are creating their first furniture and object collection as part of a commission initiated by contemporary design gallery, Gallery All (Beijing and LA).Over the coming months mad will be working on the remaining pieces that will complete the collection, anticipated for launch mid 2017. A symbolic object the legs memorialise an imagined Martian mountain range, the tabletop plays host to a plant; a reminder that the purpose of gathering at the table is to live sustainably, to enable ecology rather than reduce it, through their agricultural habits – as has happened on much of Earth.The overall collection is a journey into science fiction. Like all science fiction the narrative is driven by a widespread social concern; can technology provide the answers to rescue humanity from environmental catastrophe on earth? For Ma Yansong this collection represents Noah beyond the ark, humanity beyond Earth projected into a new condition by advanced technology. This small Community of astronauts are at once the most celebrated example of technological achievement on Earth and entirely liberated from the agendas of home. In this tension between nostalgia and the freedom of being the only Community to occupy an entire plant what new symbolic language develops? The collection imagines answers to this question.
