This is a beautifully carved and giltwood French Neo-Rococo style display cabinet, from the end of the 19th century. The Rococo style of French antique furniture began in the 18th century. Then they began focusing on interiors of palatial French mansions of Louis XV and Louis XVI. Original Rococo style items from the 1700′s are rare to find but the majority of Rococo style antiques are highly crafted reproductions from the late 1800′s or early 1900′s, as is this one.. The extensive foliate carved filigree is just amazing and the shell design is a common signature of this period of furniture. It is an absolutely stunning piece with ornate carvings on all three sides of the 2-part piece and there is also a light in the cabinet. The table underneath is made from 2 pieces of wood and seamed in the center (you can see it in my picture of the underside of the table) The case has glass sides and a front glass door with a key for opening. The inside back is a mirror with fine gold veining as a design. The very top and bottom are glass. This is a very rare find and in good condition for the age. There are places where it was touched up before I got it. The touch-ups were done to cover the white ‘plaster’ layer which is used in the gilding process. This is a highly valued piece, thank you.
