Antique Japanese Shop Counter With Glass Display And Drawers, 1920s

Chairish

$5,718

Dimensions: height 100 cm, width 176 cm, depth 47 cm. This rare Japanese shop counter combines storage and display in one strong, architectural piece of furniture. One side features a showcase front with two glass sliding doors; inside, a shelf allows you to present objects clearly and neatly. Below the display section are three generous drawers running across the full width, finished with understated metal pulls. The standout feature is the double access: the drawers can be opened from both sides, making the piece as practical in a retail setting as it is at home. The counter is made from kiri (paulownia), a wood widely used in Japan for functional storage furniture thanks to its lightweight yet stable qualities. The surface has aged beautifully, with warm tones, honest wear, and a deep natural patina that gives the piece real character. The opposite side is solid wood (without glass), allowing it to be placed freely in the room. Today, it works beautifully as a low display cabinet for ceramics, books or objects, as a distinctive TV stand or sideboard, or as a room divider. You get a display-facing side and a calm wooden back, with practical storage drawers accessible from either side.
