This Chess Set is a collaboration with the artist Laura McKinley made from handblown crystal glass, blown-in London. The Chessboard and cover are made from solid thousands-of-years-old bog oak, with solid brass inlay. The different coloured checkers are from different aged bog oak. The dark square is older in age.The wood we have selected for this project is an indigenous, bog oak from the north of Cambridgeshire. This wood is thousands of years old, with some pieces dating back to 3000 B.C. Submerged in anaerobic conditions the oak reacts with the minerals and acids in the soil to develop its stunning character and unique colouration. Our boxes are constructed using solid bog oak with traditional horn finger joints as the detail. They are then treated with light Danish oil, enhancing the natural hue of the wood.
