The rich patina of the original finish on this tall chest is something antique collector's dream about as it visible reminder of the history and character that later reproductions simply cannot achieve. Along with its incredible patina, this tall chest has wonderfully figured walnut, graceful ogee bracket feet, and slender reeding to simulate columns on either side of the drawers. These features add to its stately presence. Also, the cornice on top can be removed for transport. All these features are part of the Chippendale design aesthetic popular in America during the mid to late 1700s. Given the type of nails used in the back, it was made at the end of that time range. With yellow pine secondary wood, the nature of these particular design elements, and our having discovered this piece in Frederick, Maryland, it is likely this tall chest is from Western Maryland. It is a magnificent piece that antique collectors and design enthusiasts alike will appreciate.
