An absolutely stunning tall chest by the Widdicomb Furniture Company. CA 1950s. The walnut grain has a depth and clarity far exceeding the original opaque finish. This piece has always been well loved and was in very good condition when we purchased it at a local estate. It was refinished because the original finish was slightly opaque and dark, obscuring the color and grain. This was common before the pioneering work of George Nakashima. Finishes in the 1950s were designed to cover "imperfections" in the wood, hiding the depth and color of the wood. Mr. Nakashima embraced these characteristics and his finish, and the finish of this piece, highlight the beauty and color of the walnut. The pictures do not do the piece justice... The third photograph, straight on, is the most accurate for color and clarity.
