Provincial Baroque chest of drawers from the Aachen region. Second half of the 18th century. Crafted from solid oak. Restored to a ready-to-use condition with a sanded, bleached finish. A beautiful example from the Aachen area, renowned for its 18th-century furniture-making, whose appeal lies in its form and frame mouldings, crafted with traditional craftsmanship, as well as, not least, the outstanding texture of the old oak, which, thanks to the light, bleached finish, lends the piece a contemporary appeal. A three-drawer, moulded oak body with side panelling, featuring a subtly ‘en arbalete’ curved front and a matching top panel. Rounded pilasters and the base frame, with its multiple curves, terminate in stylised, volute-shaped carved feet. Each of the three drawers can be opened using a key and locked with the original lock. Original embossed brass key plates fitted. Dimensions Height: 90 cm  /  35.43 in. Width: 126 cm  /  49.61 in. Depth: 64 cm  /  25.20 in. Internal dimensions of the drawers: 18.5 cm x 107.5 cm x 55 cm  /  7.28 in x 42.32 in x 21.65 in. In good condition with slight age-related signs of wear, including old woodworm tunnels (not active!) and repairs. Some of the drawer fronts protrude slightly (see photos), though this does not affect its functionality. The drawer bottoms have been faithfully restored using softwood. Historicist drop handles, which had been fitted at a later date, were removed during restoration and the holes filled with wooden dowels. One original key is included; two have been added. The surface of the chest of drawers was stripped of its dark finish, carefully sanded and bleached, revealing the natural texture of the unsealed old oak in a light, matt finish.
