Rare Pair 18th C. Italian Venetian Rococo Hand-Painted Polychrome Bombe Commodes

Chairish

$28,000

Meet one of the most extraordinary finds we've had the pleasure of offering — a genuine matched pair of 18th century Italian Venetian Rococo hand-painted commodes, straight out of a distinguished Northern California private collection where they lived quietly for decades. These are the real thing. Hand-worked softwood construction with wide-plank unfinished backs, hand-cut saw marks, and period nail patterns that tell the story of their age without apology. The deep craquelure network across all painted surfaces isn't distressed — it's 250+ years of authentic patina doing exactly what it's supposed to do. Rich saffron-ochre grounds absolutely alive with hand-painted floral bouquets — roses, daisies, mixed garden blooms in red, pink, blue and green — framed by scrolling red strapwork cartouches. The decoration wraps all four sides plus the tops. Dramatically serpentine bombé fronts. Deeply scalloped aprons. Carved cabriole legs with scroll feet. Corner pilasters with figural carved drops. These are statement pieces that command a room. Two drawers each Original iron bail pulls — no replacements Old linen inventory tag on back of one piece suggesting prior estate or collection passage Decoration extends to sides and tops — not just the fronts Each measures 31.5"W × 15.5"D × 31.75"H Provenance Ex-distinguished Bay Area private collection, acquired from a prominent Northern California family; thence by gift to the present owner. Priced as a pair. Separation considered at a significant per-piece premium.
