This massive antique chest of drawers from Catalonia (Spain) exhibits a pure tactile joy in how the aqua blue paint has eroded to a soft, chippy pattern with areas of walnut wood grain showing through. Dating to the turn of the 19th century (circa 1800), the rectilinear form is composed of five, massive drawers opened by brass ring pull hardware. Refreshingly there is no superfluous ornament that would compete with or distract from the ambitious construction of thick, solid planks exhibiting wild knots and grain patterns evident when the drawers are open. The case has been gently cleaned with a French paste wax to preserve and highlight the historic character. Please view the detailed images to see more
