English Mahogany Drop Leaf Ladies Sewing Table 19th century, English an antique mahogany drop-leaf work or sewing table featuring flame mahogany veneer, a single central pedestal base with splayed balled feet, and a drawer with internal compartments and a green felt lined surface to utilize as a work space. It is a drop-leaf table, where the hinged leaves can be extended for a larger surface area or folded down to a compact size for placement against a wall as a console or side table. Ladies' work tables, also known tables, originated in England around the 1770s and became popular fixtures in middle and upper-class homes throughout the 19th century. They were designed as dedicated, portable stations for needlework and other "leisure activities" for gentlewomen.
