A unique historic artifact – a Roman bronze statuette of Mercury, holding a caduceus, with ram at side, of Polykeitan style. Circa 1st Century A.D. Displayed on base pedestal. Polykleitos was a 5th century BCE Greek sculptor who created works that influenced Western art, and there are Roman copies of his work that date back to the 1st century BCE. A bronze statue that illustrates Polykleitos's treatise The Canon, which outlined the mathematical proportions of the ideal male body. The Doryphoros is considered a pinnacle of ancient sculpture and a testament to the Greek search for universal harmony. The male figure with a particular stance, body structure, or gesture are generally created by Polykleitos. From a private collection with Detroit Institute of Arts provenance (see paperwork in listing). Dimensions: 3 1/4 ”h x 2” 1/4 x 1”d (sculpture) / 3”h x 1” 1/4 x 1”w (base). In good condition consistent with age.
