Thomas Chippendale illustrated designs for "Chinese Railing" in his furniture style bible, The Gentleman's and Cabinet-Maker's Director, first published in 1754. From London to Williamsburg, fashionable houses incorporated porch railings and stair balustrades designed in the Chinese manner.
