This striking and early floor lamp was designed by the celebrated italian duo franco albini and franca helg, and manufactured by sirrah in 1969 as part of their innovative am/as lighting system. The series, conceived as a modular design solution, allowed for a high degree of configurability, where bases and shades could be interchangeably combined using a patented internal switch system. This particular model features the as2 base, identifiable in period catalogues, and comes in a highly rare, full-white version, echoing albini’s original design concept for the series. The am/as system became one of sirrah’s most successful and technically advanced lines, renowned for its precision engineering, clean modernist aesthetics, and durability. Albini and helg, known for their rigorously architectural approach to furniture and lighting, brought a strong sense of proportion, restraint, and material quality to this series. While later iterations of the lamp introduced more contrasting finishes, the early monochrome white edition, as seen here, offers a purist vision of albini’s original intent, a seamless interplay of form and light. Each shade can be lit individually using the double floor switch. Crafted in metal and opaline glass, this lamp provides a warm, diffused glow when illuminated, thanks to its two e27 sockets (up to 100 watts each). The opaline shade remains intact and pristine, while the original white-painted base shows minor age-related wear and subtle paint loss, consistent with its vintage character. Franco albini (1905–1977) was one of italy’s most influential modernist architects and designers, and franca helg his long-time collaborator, noted for their shared pursuit of rational, functional, and aesthetically refined design. Their work for sirrah, including the am/as series, represents a high point in postwar italian lighting, where technical ingenuity met sculptural clarity. This lamp is in good, fully original condition, and examples in this colorway are exceptionally hard to find.
