Savonarola chair, also known as a curule or X-chair. Crafted from wood, likely walnut, it features a distinctive folding X-shaped frame composed of gracefully curved slats that intersect to form the legs and seat. The backrest, which can be detached and is elaborately carved with a central cartouche and scrolling foliate motifs, while the armrests end in rounded finials. Named after the 15th-century Florentine friar Girolamo Savonarola, this style of chair was originally used as a portable throne by Italian aristocracy and clergy, symbolizing authority and refinement.
