Federal Sheraton Flame Mahogany Card Table 19thc

Chairish

$1,200

An antique Federal Sheraton card table, crafted from flame mahogany in the 19th century. This elegant piece features a rectangular fold-over top, designed to reveal a playing surface when opened. The apron is adorned with intricate brass inlay, showcasing a central starburst motif flanked by graceful foliate designs. It stands on a finely carved, twisted pedestal column, supported by four splayed legs terminating in brass casters, allowing for easy repositioning. The rich flame mahogany grain is prominent throughout, characteristic of the period's fine craftsmanship. This versatile table serves as both a decorative accent and a functional piece for games or display. HISTORICAL NOTE: Game tables (often called card or parlor tables) were highly fashionable status symbols in affluent homes where parlor games and gambling were common pastimes. They feature a hinged or swivel "D-shaped" or bowed top. When closed, they served as decorative console tables pushed flush against a wall. When opened, the top doubled in size, revealing a felt-lined playing surface. Measures - 28.5"H x 36"W x 17.75"D; 35.5"(closed)
