Primitive shaker-style splint reed Footstool or ottoman. Appears to have a varnished finish. There is damage to one stretcher. It feels as if there was something that chewed on it a few times, but with the thing or the stool was removed from the environment. So it is not terribly gnawed at. There are two spots where the reed is noticeably damaged. Otherwise in good stable condition. I would not recommend placing too much weight on the stool unless you decide to have it rewoven. The finish appears consistent with late 19th century or earlier craftsmanship, although further examination would be needed to confirm this.
