Beautiful antique American Federal period bed with unusually tall posts with acanthus carved bells on the foot posts. This bed will need a custom sized spring and mattress. It was common for only the foot posts to be carved and not all 4 posts. Bed has had an interesting history in that at one point in its life all 4 posts were cut to fit in a room with a sloped ceiling. Thankfully they saved the pieces and probably when the bed was refinished in the 1970's the pieces were reattached where they belong. Whomever did it did a great job! I also believe originally the bed was only held together by the rope mattress and shortly after bolts were added probably by the maker of the bed. The rails only fit one way so the Roman numerals have to be lined up on rails and posts. There is a scratch in the pine headboard that can be seen in one of the photos. Posts are 63 1/2" tall. Bed is 54" wide at the outside and the bed is 82" long overall. Inside the rails it measures 49 1/4" by 75 3/4". If you want to place a box spring inside the rails you will have to add angle irons to support the box spring.
