French Neo-Gothic Prie-Dieu Prayer Chair, 1870s

Chairish

$684

This antique French prie-dieu dates from the late 19th century, circa 1870–1880. An evocative example of Neo-Gothic religious furniture, it reflects the deep spiritual craftsmanship characteristic of ecclesiastical interiors of the period. The finely turned wooden frame, finished in a rich dark patina, features elegant spindle legs and stretchers. The central hand-carved cross, framed by a trefoil motif, forms the symbolic heart of the piece — a strong visual reference to Catholic iconography of the time. The kneeling cushion and seat are upholstered in period velvet fabric with a geometric diamond pattern in a warm golden ochre tone. The upholstery is finished with traditional nailhead trim, reinforcing its authenticity and antique character. Originally intended for private devotion in a domestic chapel, monastery, or church setting, this prie-dieu today transcends its religious function. It becomes a sculptural accent piece — ideal in an entryway, library, bedroom, or as part of a curated historical or spiritual interior. A rare decorative object blending symbolism, craftsmanship, and timeless presence. Dimensions Height: 85 cm Width: 48 cm Depth: 48 cm Seat height: 30 cm État Good antique condition. Minor signs of age and wear consistent with its period. Patina preserved.
