An elegant French Neoclassical figural lamp, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century (circa 1880–1910). This finely modeled allegorical figure is cast in dark patinated bronze, and stands on a round black marble plinth. The female figure, robed in flowing classical drapery, stands barefoot and gracefully raises a torch-shaped fixture in one hand while holding a shallow bowl in the other. Symbolizing light and enlightenment, this form is typical of the torchère lamps inspired by the works of French sculptors such as the Moreau brothers and Clodion. Originally designed as gas or oil lighting, this example has been converted for electricity, with a socket fitted to the torch. It once likely featured a frosted flame- or globe-shaped shade, and today it makes a dramatic statement in libraries, parlors, or eclectic interiors.
