This rare heavy bronze hanging oil lantern hung in the stone stairwell of a Château in the Dordogne valley. Prior to the electrification of the property, this lantern would often be the last light out. Oil would be poured in the upper receptacle and soaked wicks would hang out of each opening, the pan below meant to catch any falling debris. Provenance: Chateau outside Montignac, France.
